The Winemaker

After many decades in Chianti Classico , Klaus Johann Reimitz is probably the most Tuscan of all the German winemakers based here.

Since the Italian by choice, born in Düsseldorf in 1951, found his second home in the vineyards of Radda in Chianti while studying philosophy in Perugia in the early 1980s, Sangiovese has been the focus of his interest. On numerous trips to other European wine regions, but especially to Bourgogne, he quickly discovered the secrets, difficulties and special requirements of producing elegant, pure wines.

In the cellar he passionately and precisely observes the making of wine in his large barrels.

From the very beginning he dealt intensively with Sangiovese, on Montevertine (with twenty-five groundbreaking vintages of the pure “Le Pergole Torte”, which he brought to world fame together with Sergio Manetti and the great wine taster Giulio Gambelli) - and since 2010 on the Poggio al Sole winery owned by his friend Johannes Davaz. Here, above the Badia a Passignano near Tavernelle, Klaus Johann Reimitz cultivates first-class Sangiovese vines on a vineyard plot of just over one hectare planted in 1992, which he named after his adored great-grandmother Tamara von Boronzky, a wine connoisseur of high rank in her time Graden, gave. In the cellar, he passionately and precisely observes the making of wine in his large barrels - “with eyes, nose and mouth”, a lot of patience, strong nerves and a very strong feeling for the crucial moment.

This wine appears "neither rustic and rural, nor internationally styled."

Klaus Johann Reimitz likes to be alone in the basement; If necessary, his wine-loving sons Tancredi Maria and Clemente Johann come to his aid. The extraordinary, rare wines that are created in this way have found a great response in the wine world - one critic recognized them as “a new dimension of Sangiovese”. It appears “neither rustic and rural, nor internationally styled. He is allowed to retain his untamed character and yet becomes unusually graceful and fine.” Klaus Johann Reimitz lives in Florence and on Montevertine.
