Wine at the limit

Wein am Limit

Hendrik Thoma in conversation with Thomas Schröder

Today we're talking about a mutual friend of ours. Klaus Reimitz, together with Sergio Manetti from Montevertine in Tuscany, has produced one of the most impressive wines in this region: "Le Pergole Torte" was way ahead of its time. Over the decades it became an icon and was classified as a so-called "Supertuscan". In the 1980s, most winemakers in this region relied on the help of the intensely colored varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to give the acidic Sangiovese more fullness. "Le Pergole Torte" is the antipode to this. An elegant, fine wine made from 100% Sangiovese and aged for one year in large Slavonian oak barrels and another year in barriques. A wine for the sake of wine and not a monster wine in disco format that caters to simple tastes.
A few years ago, Klaus Reimitz left the Montevertine winery for family reasons. With that, one of the most charismatic winemakers I know left. With the 2011 "Reimitz", Klaus is celebrating his debut and at the same time a brilliant comeback.
He has leased a small plot of land called "Boronzky" on the Poggio al Sole winery and is allowed to use the winery's cellar rooms. The master's hand in handling the stubborn Sangiovese is already evident in the first vintage. A fine, fragrant red wine that gets better with every sip. The finely integrated acidity and the bouquet of sour cherry are reminiscent of a young Burgundy. I am personally fascinated by the careful handling of the wood, which provides a worthy framework for the overall work of art. Unfortunately, I experience too often that the "wooden monkey" has rammed the barrel and only a pile of spear wood remains of the wine. With the "Reimitz" you can see the class and the sense of balance of its creator. The fact that this wine gets even better with age is clearly evident in its substance. It exudes an unusual lightness and yet a mouth-filling fullness.
Due to the small quantities produced, the wine is only sold in containers of 24 singles, 6 magnums and 1 double magnum. If you would like to buy the wine, please send an email to info@reimitzwine.com . I would like to expressly point out that neither Thomas Schröder nor I have a financial interest in this wine. On the contrary, we are delighted that an old friend is once again enriching the world of wine with his skills and passion.

“In taste we trust!”

Best regards,
Hendrik
